7 of the 12 tracks here - the instrumentals - are quite good, and worth the price of admission for me. I really wish they had distilled these 7: Sunburst, Altitude, Fractal Liaison, Thunderdog, Listen, Miracle, and Over and out to a 7 track EP... Which would make sense considering how prominently the number 7 is used as a theme for their work.

The other 5 are not unlistenable (some are maybe even a little catchy), but I think the other reviews and comments say it all. They would probably fit better on a seal album... Or as a separate project with a different title.

Ultimately the American release (the Caroline - 777) is a step in the right direction. They add depth disco, and put 4 strong tracks up front. Then you get the 5 "black sheep" in a row, followed by a block of 5 strong instrumentals (some remixed), adding Mia (the fisherman remix) to the end.

So why get the original "System 7" pressing when you could get the "777" edition instead? Well you get the original mix of Sunburst, which I think is stronger than the seahorse mix (though the differences are not major here). And you also get the original mix of Miracle, which is a great track, plus the rainbow dome inspired artwork, and the collectible appeal that it's the original version of the first album, which could matter more to some than to others. Luckily, both editions are dirt cheap: less than or equal to singles like Alpha wave or 7:7 expansion, and WAY less than Borobudur; so if you look at it as a 7 or 9 song single or EP, it's even a good deal then.

This is the one System 7 album that hasn't aged very well and isn't very indicative of their deep, accomplished style. Questionable pop vocals and "smooth jazz" guitar solos permeate throughout, and with the lone exceptions of Altitude & Listen (both co-produced by Derrick May), there aren't many energetic or danceable moments. But this was their first album before they went headfirst into their soon-to-be signature ambient and trance, so I'll cut them a little slack and chalk it up to some good experience for the duo.
